It gives me great pleasure to inform you that August 2021 marks the 40th year of founding of ICRIER. From a humble beginning in a modest office in the corridors of the India International Center to a globally reputed economic think tank in four decades is a matter of pride for all ICRIERians.

To give you a glimpse of our past, in its very first year, ICRIER was engaged in 27 research studies across four thematic areas on external finance, foreign trade, regional economic cooperation, and technological advancement. The external finance project was conceived by two eminent economists and Padma award holders: Prof. Jagdish Bhagwati and Prof. T.N. Srinivasan. Over the years, thematic areas have evolved, keeping in view the changing domestic and international context (see below).

To commemorate ICRIER’s 40^th anniversary, we are planning a year-long celebration of events under the theme “ICRIER @40 and India’s Economic Reforms @30.” You’ll hear more on this from me soon.

Keeping up with India’s development priorities and a changing world, we have restructured our existing eight thrust areas into five strategic themes. This was done after consultation with the Board, faculty members and our key stakeholders. The new themes are future ready, while they also allow us to stay focused on our core research objective and contribute effectively to the policy priorities of India. The new themes are:



In the month of July, ICRIER organised an event on “Doing Business in India: Regulation & Pricing of Alcoholic Beverages”, and released the Report “Developing Principles for Regulation & Pricing of Alcoholic Beverages Sector in India”. The report gained traction and attracted meaningful policy debate. ICRIER also hosted the ICRIER-KAS Webinar on Tackling COVID-19: Public Health and Socioeconomic Strategies. A Policy Brief was released on the same topic and it was widely disseminated.

ICRIER researchers continued to publish various policy-oriented and analytical pieces in the media. These are organised as per the new themes below.
