About APSI Program

Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) is a premier policy think tank in the country. APSI program specializes in the field of agriculture policies, sustainability, and innovations. The programme is led by Dr. Ashok Gulati, Distinguished Professor at ICRIER.  APSI has four major thrust areas: (i) Transformation of Agri-food systems in the backdrop of climate change; (ii) Augmenting farmers’ incomes through high value agriculture and making their value chains more efficient, inclusive, sustainable, and fit for financing as business models; (iii) Agricultural markets, trade and institutions; (iv) Food and Nutritional Security. In all these sub-themes, innovations remain the key focus, be it in policies, programs, products, or practices.

APSI is seeking researchers with a commitment and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Diversification towards high value agriculture to augment farmers’ incomes; Building efficient value chains for selected vegetables such as TOP (Tomato, Onion, Potato), or fruits and fisheries; dairy and poultry.
  • augmenting farmers income through agrivoltaics, with solar as a third crop on farmers’ fields;
  • augmenting farmers income by building value chains in cotton from Farm, Factory, Fashion and Foreign, i.e., looking at value chain of cotton from farm to garment exports. A key question of interest is: how Bangladesh and Vietnam have done better in garment exports than India, despite India having gene revolution in cotton farms?
  • doubling agriculture exports by 2030; This would look into policy framework, logistics, institutional structures, and competitive advantage of our products in global markets. The idea is to chalk out a proper strategy that can double India’s agri-exports in global markets by 2030, as this will help augment farmers’ incomes.

Skills:

Agriculture economists with a holistic view of food systems; experts in marketing and trade issues, Climate change and sustainability of agriculture; Engineers interested in agrivoltaics (solar) for clean energy and augmenting farmers’ incomes. And a communication expert with good editing skills.
