ICRIER Invites Applications for the position of Fellow

Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) is looking to hire a full-time Fellow to be part of its Climate Change Urbanization and Sustainability (CCUS) division. ICRIER is a premier policy research think-tank working in the field of energy, environment and climate change. Specifically, the CCUS division works on four major thrust areas:

  • Clean Technologies: Techno-economics of energy transition solutions (clean power, transport systems and industrial decarbonisation), incl. clean fuels.
  • Green Growth: Economic Modelling with a focus on energy transition impacts, international trade, carbon pricing and estimating financing needs and sources
  • Environmental Engineering: Economic Modelling with a focus on energy transition impacts, international trade, carbon pricing and estimating financing needs and sources
  • Adaptation and Loss & Damage: Economic Modelling with a focus on energy transition impacts, international trade, carbon pricing and estimating financing needs and sources

Qualifications and Experience:

Candidate should have recently completed their PhD in fields including economics, financial economics, energy economics, environmental economics or quantitative economics from a reputed Indian or Foreign University.

OR

  • Candidate should have Masters in economics, financial economics, energy economics, environmental economics or quantitative economics from a reputed Indian or Foreign University. In this case, candidate should have at least 5 years of job experience in a reputable research institute.
  • Candidate should have a rich policy research experience in the field of energy/environment/climate change, demonstrated through excellent publication record and other outreach mediums.
  • Candidates with prior project and team management experience will be preferred.
  • Candidate should showcase knowledge of key international and national macro-economic and climate-relevant datasets.
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English with excellent communication skills

Job Requirement: 

Role: To work collaboratively under the guidance of the Thematic Lead and with the rest of the CCUS team on pertinent research studies seeking to answer vital policy questions on energy, climate change, environment, and sustainable development. The role demands strong analytical depth, independent research capabilities, and the ability to translate complex analysis into policy-relevant outputs. Some of the other key requirements are as follows: 

  • Ability to carry out primary and secondary data collection, management, and assessment (qualitative as well as quantitative) and empirical economic analysis.
  • Familiarity with assessing climate-relevant financing and expenditure, including reviewing budgets, programmes, or investments to understand their relevance to climate adaptation and/or mitigation objectives.
  • Ability to contribute to analysis of financing needs, gaps, and priorities for climate-related actions, and to support alignment of research outputs with national strategies, policy frameworks, and development objectives.
  • Excellent research and writing skills demonstrated through high-quality research reports, working papers, policy briefs, journal articles, presentations, opinion pieces, etc.
  • Experience in contributing to and delivering research projects from end to end (i.e. proposal writing to final output submission) and research team leadership. Preference would be given to candidates who have led or co-led government-supported projects on energy, environment and climate change-related themes.
  • Ability to synthesize complex technical findings into clear, concise, and policy-relevant narratives for diverse audiences, including policymakers, donors, and practitioners.
  • Proficiency in statistical and modelling tools such as STATA, R, Python, GAMS, GTAP, GEMPACK, or similar Strong preference will be given to candidates having prior GAMS knowledge.
  • Experience in conducting primary research in different states of India, engaging with government and non-government sectors;
  • Proven capacity to integrate sectoral, institutional, and macro-policy perspectives (e.g., energy, climate adaptation/mitigation, public finance).
  • Ability to identify policy gaps, generate ideas and identify potential funding sources and opportunities.
  • Capability of leadership, for mentoring and providing research-related feedback to junior team members.
  • Experience in presenting research findings at national and international conferences and seminars.
  • Experience in organising events for dissemination of results, e.g. stakeholders’ workshops, conferences, round-tables, focused group discussions, etc.;
  • Ability to manage timelines, coordinate with internal teams, and liaise with external partners and clients.
