The Position

ICRIER invites application for a Microeconomist with specialization in inclusive development for the position of Senior Fellow (equivalent to an Associate Professor)

About ICRIER

The Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) – one of India’s preeminent economic think tanks and a thought leader in inter-disciplinary research – is inviting application for the position of a Senior Fellow (Associate Professor) for its Growth, Employment, and Macroeconomics (GEM) team. We are looking for a bright, motivated and enthusiastic Economist interested in working on a wide range of issues on inclusive development. The selected candidate will work with a large, experienced and multi-disciplinary team of development professionals. 

Qualifications and Work Experience

Candidates with a PhD degree in economics or public policy with 4-5 years of work experience are encouraged to apply. Candidates with a Master’s degree in economics or public policy with 7-8 years of post-Master’s work experience should also consider applying. Those in academia, and interested in taking sabbatical for one to two years, and work on policy issues, are most welcome to apply. Candidates from different disciplinary backgrounds with commensurate experience in policy work are encouraged to apply as well.

We are looking for an Economist with a strong track record of independent empirical research and publication in peer-reviewed journals. The areas of expertise include employment, poverty, inequality and gender. It is desirable for the person to have at least six publications in high quality journals and authored or co-authored books/ book chapters. The person must also have experience in writing proposals and raising funds. Knowledge and experience of both qualitative and quantitative research methods and familiarity with interdisciplinary research methodologies will be necessary. Prior experience in research and policy engagement on India-specific issues would be an advantage. Strong familiarity with databases on household survey and labor force is a requirement. Excellent written and presentation skills are highly desired. Fluency in oral and written English is a necessity. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment, and with multiple stakeholders, will be important.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide intellectual and technical leadership on issues of inclusive development by publishing high-quality reports, working papers and policy briefs;
  • Supervise research projects, mentor junior colleagues, and foster inter-thematic collaboration;
  • Build and nurture networks with key stakeholders including government, academia, private sector, and civil society organizations;
  • Organize high-impact events (e.g., roundtables, seminars and conferences) to disseminate research ideas as well as engage in knowledge building and sharing;
  • Raise sustainable funding to support the research program, though there is assured funding for the next 1-2 years to work on employment and gender issues;
  • Write and publish regularly in print, electronic and social media;
  • Participating in policy dialogues, panels and representing ICRIER at various events; and
  • Contribute to institutional activities as necessary.
