Digitalization is aiding innovation in products, business processes and business models, across markets. An exponential increase in digitally generated data, computation power, sophisticated algorithms and advanced artificial intelligence underline most of these developments, which on the one hand promise myriad benefits for consumers and economic growth, but on the other hand raise concerns on multiple fronts – impact on competition being one of them.
The attention of the policymakers and competition regulators is shifting to platform configurations that characterize the new age markets, so that these intermediaries do not operate in the absence of public oversight. The competition work programme would center around a few key contemporary issues pertaining to competition in digital markets, to inform competition policy and regulation such that India can harness the advantages of these technologies without chilling innovation.
