Reforming WTO for the 21st Century

The dialogue series titled Reforming WTO for the 21st Century was initiated in September 2021 by ICRIER in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), India Office. The objective of this Webinar Series was to discuss key areas of reform to strengthen the effectiveness of the WTO and adapt it to a changing world.

The first webinar organized on September 6, 2021, was titled Formulating New Approaches to Strengthen Multilateral Trading System and key speakers included: Peter Draper, Executive Director, Institute for International Trade, University of Adelaide; Harsha Vardhana Singh, Former Deputy Director-General, WTO; Ujal Singh Bhatia, Former Ambassador to WTO, Government of India; Ignacio Garcia Bercero, Director in DG Trade for European Commission; and Rupa Chanda, Professor of Economics, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.

The second webinar organized on November 8, 2021, focused on the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference of the WTO and dwelt on the expected outcomes and the path forward. The key speakers included: Anil Padmanabhan, Former Managing Editor, Mint; Mia Mikic, Former Director, Trade, Investment and Innovation Division, UNESCAP, Bangkok; Abhijit Das, Head and Professor, Centre for WTO Studies, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi; Stormy Mildner, Executive Director, Aspen Institute, Germany; and Antonio Fernandez-Martoz, Head of Unit, Multilateral Affairs and WTO, DG Trade, European Commission.

The key speakers included: Sanjaya Baru, former Director, Geo-Economics and Strategy Program, International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS); Claudia Schmucker, Head, Geoeconomics Program, German Council on Foreign Relations; Biswajit Dhar, Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India; Marianne Schneider-Petsinger, Senior Research Fellow, Chatham House; and Amitendu Palit, Senior Fellow, National University of Singapore.
