The fifth Regional Knowledge Dissemination and Capacity Building Workshop on Urbanisation with focus on Solid Waste Management in India was held in Guwahati on April 29-30, 2013. Special focus of the workshop was on the North Eastern states. The participating cities were from the states of Assam, Sikkim, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.
Shri Tarun Gogoi, Chief Minister, Assam was Chief Guest at the inaugural session. This session presented good practices in community participation in de-centralised composting and other innovations in managing municipal solid waste. The discussions focused on the applicability of the lessons learnt from Pune and Pammal to the North Eastern states. In the subsequent sessions, the participants from the eight states shared their challenges in collection, transportation and disposal of municipal waste.
