Vinaya is a development economist with over 34 years of experience across various sectors and regions within the World Bank. Throughout his tenure, he has focused on policy-based research, knowledge sharing, and fostering economic dialogue and reform in client countries. His last role at the World Bank, where he served until his retirement in July 2024, was as an Economic Adviser to the Vice President for the Africa Region. Previously, he was the Global Lead for Growth in the World Bank’s Global Practice of Macroeconomics and Fiscal Management. He has also served as a Sector Manager for economic policy and poverty issues in the South Asia Region.
Vinaya has made significant contributions to the field of economics through his publications in refereed journals including the Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Monetary Economics, and World Bank Economic Review. His research interests span a range of topics including aid effectiveness, public spending and economic growth, governance, public infrastructure pricing, and taxation efficiency. Recently, he has been blogging about various challenges faced by developing countries.
Vinaya earned his PhD in Economics from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, USA. He is a graduate of Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University.
