Position:  Research Associate (Climate Change, Urbanisation and Sustainability)
Location: New Delhi 

Description:

Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), an autonomous, policy-oriented, not-for-profit, policy think tank based in New Delhi is looking for a Research Associate for its Climate Change, Urbanisation and Sustainability team.

The team consists of seasoned professionals belonging to a variety of disciplines, covering multiple facets of this broad theme. The team is engaged in cutting-edge research employing a variety of models to tackle core energy and environmental issues. It offers its research services to different government ministries for shaping their negotiation stances at multiple forums such as the G20, UNFCCC, etc., and also provides timely insights into some of the key questions that the country is grappling with. Specifically, the CCUS division works on three major thrust areas:

  • Clean Technologies and Green Growth: Techno-economics of energy transition solutions (clean power, transport systems and industrial decarbonisation), incl. clean fuels, combined with economic modelling to assess impacts on growth, international trade, carbon pricing and estimating financing needs and sources.
  • Circular Economy and Environment: Economic analysis and modelling of environmental impacts, with a focus on resource efficiency and waste management, recycling systems, critical raw materials, EV battery circularity, etc.
  • Adaptation and Loss & Damage: Macroeconomic impacts of Disaster management and resiliency planning: picking critical strands of research such as adaptation resourcing, modelling disaster impacts and loss and damage estimation, building systemic resiliency and improving post-disaster recovery

Job Requirements:

Typical requirements include the following:

  • An M.Phil. degree or MA/ MSc. (Economics / Statistics / related fields) from a reputed University with 2 years of work experience in policy research. Advanced quantitative skills are sought. Prior experience of working on econometric or statistical models (specifically optimization models) is required. Candidates with additional experience or training in environmental or energy economics or natural resource management would be preferred.
  • The candidate should have excellent programming capabilities. S/he should be comfortable working on Stata, R or Python. Expertise in GAMS is an additional merit.
  • As collation of data from multiple sources would be required, experience in handling large unit-level government data (ASI, NSSO Unit-level surveys, Census, etc.) is a must.
  • Good research and writing skills.
  • Willingness to travel for surveys, stakeholder meetings and other work-related engagements

Work Responsibilities:

The Research Associate will support the team with various environmental and climate change projects.

The work comprises the following activities:

  • Research and Knowledge Generation: The candidate will work in a fast-paced environment and assist the team with various research projects. S/he will be responsible for data collection, cleaning, and analysis. Research work may involve primary or secondary research, and the candidate must be comfortable with both. The collected knowledge will need to be documented in the form of reports/working papers/policy briefs/strategy papers/op-eds/journal articles, depending on the needs of the project.
  • Stakeholder Management: Management and interaction with stakeholders are critical aspects of the job. The candidate must be comfortable with networking and interacting with stakeholders regularly.
  • Project Management: The candidate is expected to help the team with managing the project and organising events, stakeholders’ meetings, roundtables, etc. The project management activities also include dissemination activities outlined in the project.

While the abovementioned activities outline the responsibility of the candidate, it may not be limited to the same, and additional responsibilities could be assigned by the thematic lead.
