Although AI has entered India s education curricula, its adoption by the educational system has been largely confined to higher educational institutions. The impact of generative AI and the release of chatbots (including the initial versions of ChatGPT) was not felt in India’s education sector until the launch of Open AI s GPT 4 in March 2023. Today, generative chatbots such as ChatGPT and GPT 4 by Open AI; Bard by Google; and LLaMA by Meta are used by school going students in India. In many cases this is without the formal sanction of educational institutions.
India’s National Education Policy provide s guidance on the intersection of emerging technologies and the design of educational programmes, the implications of generative chatbots on prevalent models of teaching and learning remain unassessed in India . While UNESCO’s recommendations on AI e thics also provides a set of guidelines on the ethical dimensions of AI. School education provides the foundation of human capital formation in any economy. How schools adapt to these technologies and integrate them into their teaching and learning programs is important for policy making in the sphere of education. UNESCO s State of the Education Report for India 2022 has surveyed the state of AI education in the country. The impact of AI on school education in India in the wake of the advent of chatbots like Chat GP Tand GPT 4 is yet to be assessed.
This Conference proposes to deliberate on the impact of generative AI and AI chatbots on secondary and high school education. The discussions, although focused on India will also draw upon international perspectives on the impact of AI in education. The goal of this conference is to assess the adoption of generative AI tools and technologies by India’s educational institutions with the advent of chatbots such as Chat GPT and GPT 4. It will also deliberate on possible parameters of responsible use of AI in schools.
Participants at the Conference will include a variety of stakeholder’s teachers, heads of education institutions from India and abroad, policymakers, academicians, NGOs, design thinkers, technologists and ed tech start ups that specialise on AI in relation to education in schools.
The discussions will focus on four main themes;
A. AI as a transformational tool in school education
B. National and sub national perspectives on changes in education policies necessitated by generative AI
C. Responsible use of AI in school education
D. International perspectives on generative AI in school education
