Dr Gill was the World Bank Group’s Chief Economist and Senior Vice President for Development Economics from 2022 to 2026, and before that served as the Bank’s Vice President for Growth, Finance, and Institutions, helping shape its response to the extraordinary series of shocks that have hit the world economy since 2020. He is currently a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and was earlier a professor of public policy at Duke University and non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.
He led the World Bank’s influential 2009 World Development Report on economic geography and introduced the concept of the “middle-income trap” to describe how countries stagnate after reaching a certain level of income. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago and an MA in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics.
