Dr. Tewari is a Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Director of the Modern Indian Studies Initiative. She holds a Ph.D. in Economic Development from MIT and specializes in economic development, industrial policy, and the urban informal economy, with a focus on globalization’s impact on firms, workers, and local economies.

Her research explores how regions and institutions adapt to global competition and economic restructuring. She has consulted for esteemed organizations such as the World Bank, UNIDO, and ILO and has previously taught at MIT. Dr. Tewari is also a member of the Research and Advisory Committee for India’s Institute of Small Enterprise Development.

Dr. Tewari has received numerous academic honors and co-edited books on global value chains and labor in Asia.
