Soil is a living ecosystem, which sustains productive soil organisms. Healthy soil contains nutrients, which sustain plant, animal and human life on planet earth. Soil is also large sink of carbon and can help in climate change mitigation with optimal agriculture and forestry practices. There is a strong linkage between soil health and human health. While we have achieved food security, it is time to work towards improving nutritional security of the growing population. Only healthy soil can provide food rich in all essential nutrients to ensure nutritional security of human and animals.
The primary objective of this project is to study the interlinkages between soil health, crop health and human health and nutrition. It aims to identify key factors contributing to degrading soil health and explore viable interventions for short- and long-term recovery. “Healing Soils in India and Beyond” is a call to action—to restore the health of our soils, and in doing so, secure a healthier, more resilient future for our people, peasants and planet.
