Of Competition: The Challenges of Platforms in India

Objective: This study will contribute to the global literature on the economic determinants of platform competition. Amidst the growing body of research, this report studies competition for digital platforms in India, providing empirical evidence to develop a nuanced understanding of the competitive landscape for platforms in the country.

Scope and Deliverables: The analyses will provide an assessment of platform characteristics, demand side trends, market forces and regulatory developments. The analysis will include a detailed literature review and stakeholder engagement with platforms across sectors to determine platform characteristics and sources of competitive advantage. A demand side analysis based on primary data from two user groups – consumers and businesses. An assessment of competition for the market versus in the market using survival analysis and a final section on regulatory stock-taking. The policy recommendations based on this analysis will inform the future trajectory of competition regulation for digital platforms in India
