The mission aimed to develop 100 smart cities across India, making them sustainable and citizen-friendly, with a focus on integrating information technology as the foundation for providing essential services. The selection of 100 smart cities occurred through four rounds of competition from January 2016 to June 2018. As per the Guidelines, the Central Government would provide financial support to the extent of Rs. 48,000 crores over five years, providing an average of ₹100 crore per city annually, complemented by contributions from State Governments and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
