India Jobs and Occupation Tracker (I-JOT)

ICRIER presents the fourth edition of the Indian Jobs and Occupations Tracker (I-JOT), its quarterly assessment of India’s labour market. This edition analyses both long-term and near-term trends across rural and urban labour markets in India. The key findings from this edition are as follows: (i) Workforce participation has increased across both rural and urban India over the long term, although recent indicators point to slowing momentum in rural areas; (ii) In rural India, the long-term expansion of the workforce was driven largely by women entering agriculture, while growth in the male workforce was primarily concentrated in construction; (iii) In urban India, the tertiary sector remained the dominant source of employment and job creation; (iv) Both absolute unemployment and unemployment rates have declined over the long term, although the reduction in absolute unemployment has not been gender neutral; and (v) Youth unemployment continues to represent the most structurally significant challenge in both rural and urban labour markets. Through its data-driven analysis, I-JOT aims to inform policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders on the evolving dynamics of India’s employment landscape.
