Strategies to boost India’s Citrus Exports

This report analyses India’s citrus sector, focusing on production trends, value chain structure, and export performance. India is among the largest producers of citrus globally, with output exceeding 16-17 million tonnes, led by states like Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. However, exports remain limited at less than 2-3 per cent of production, indicating a largely domestic orientation. The report examines constraints across the value chain, including post-harvest losses, fragmented aggregation, quality standardisation, and logistics challenges. It also benchmarks global exporters and identifies opportunities for market diversification. Based on this, the study outlines strategies to boost citrus exports through improved market access, better compliance, and targeted policy and institutional support.
